where boundaries dissolve

#20 Who Are We Becoming? - Barbara Humpton, CEO Siemens USA

Episode Summary

"People have what it takes to respond to challenges and crisis. They can lead without being directed." Barbara Humpton, CEO of Siemens USA, says. Barbara fell ill as the pandemic hit. In her absence, her team felt empowered to respond so that employees and customers were taken care of. This episode is about Barbara's purpose and drive as a leader to enable Siemens to tackle the world's most pressing challenges. She shares personal moments of growth. Most importantly, this episode shows her ability to detach from her ego to cultivate a leadership style that encourages us to become the best version of ourselves. Who are we becoming? And why does it matter so much?

Episode Notes

"It's not about what we have, it's about what we do" Barbara says. She understands how creating a culture of empowerment to advance electrification, automation, digitalization and sustainability requires her to become the best version of herself, first. It depends on how you view your role as a leader and that of your people–not as mere resources, but as individuals who can grow.

Here are my top take aways on personal growth to foster the best version of ourselves:

  1. Know your strengths and that of your team–learn to rely on and trust your experts. You have to give trust to build it.
  2. Uncover your subconscious biases to enable inclusiveness in diverse teams. You want people to feel like they belong, feel comfortable speaking up, and bring their full selves to work.
  3. Keep your ego in check: Where are you engaging in someone’s process or someone’s business? Where are you undermining someone’s ownership?
