Change is complex, confusing, ongoing, with many moving parts. It feels like “It's outside of my control." We become passive bystanders. The Storytellers, a globally successful change and transformation consulting firm, inspire people with story to shift out of a state of victimization and into one of ownership to drive digitalization.
Why do we vicitimize during change? Many learned they have little control over change, as it happens for the betterment of the firm's economic value. How we invite people to change has to be rethought if we want them to participate and own the change.
Insight from The Storytellers on Inspiring Change Ownership with Story:
1 Change Cynicism: Many don't believe the company will actually change. Storytelling helps convince people of the changes.
2 Stories Connect Change to People's Reality: Stories provide insight on the journey and they help people understand how the change connects to their job.
3 Participation in Change: We participate in the story when we relate with the story's protagonist and their journey of overcoming the change-challenges. This participatory experience teaches us learn how to own the change.
4 Enabling Middle Management for Change: Managers receive strategy slides and a high-level story, but they don't embrace it, because they lack the time to make it relevant to their teams. Managers must be equipped with tools to quickly break down the story for their teams.
5 How Story Works Top-Down: Leaders connect with people when they embody the story, let go of polished speeches, and speak from the heart. This requires a strongly aligned leadership team with consensus on how to overcome the hardship the company will face for consistency and conviction in messaging.
